Have you ever stood on the boardwalk at Boulders Beach in Simon's Town and watched African penguins waddle across the sand to the waters of False Bay? They make for one of the most endearing sights on the Cape Peninsula, yet their species has had precious little good news over the past few decades. SANParks tallied the breeding pairs at Boulders once more, and the latest beak count is welcome news… for a change!
Here at Springbok Casino, our lobby has a penguin colony of its own – two SpinLogic online slots called Penguin Palooza and Penguin Power. Both are rated as high volatility slots, yet the two titles are far from twins once you look past the penguins on their reels. The maximum bet is higher in one of them, and each has a different bonus feature for you to waddle after. The question is… which one would you opt for to place a juicy bet on?
Critically Endangered African Penguins – How Many Are Left in Mzansi?
SANParks recorded 790 breeding pairs of African penguins at Boulders in its June 2026 census, which is 92 more than the 698 pairs it found at the same colony in 2025. That's an increase of just over 13% in a single year, and the colony is now home to roughly 2,528 birds! Those birds make up about 8 to 9% of all the African penguins in South Africa, so the Boulders result is a lekker sign for overall survival of the whole species.
If they're seemingly doing well, why is a rise of 92 pairs such big news? The short answer is that very few of these feathered friends are left. The African penguin is listed as critically endangered, with fewer than 10,000 breeding pairs remaining in the wild. For a bird found only along the coasts of South Africa and Namibia, that figure is alarmingly low. SANParks identifies four main threats behind the species' decline along our coastline:
- Sardines and anchovies, the birds' main food, are in short supply.
- Their nesting habitat has been lost or damaged in places.
- Predators take eggs, chicks and adult birds.
- Disease is a further threat to every colony.
SANParks works alongside the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment, the City of Cape Town and the Southern African Foundation for the Conservation of Coastal Birds – better known as SANCCOB, the seabird rescue centre in Cape Town. Together, they look after the colony at Boulders, which is part of Table Mountain National Park. Here at Springbok Online Casino, we salute every ranger, scientist and volunteer behind those 92 extra pairs!
High Volatility Slots – Long Waits Between Wins & Bigger Payouts
In high volatility slots, winning spins are less frequent than in low volatility games, but the wins themselves are bigger. Volatility is a measure of how the payouts in a slot are spread across your spins – a few big wins or many small ones. It's a separate matter from a game's overall return to players, which is a long-term average. Expect long waits between wins and the odd big hit… and that odd big hit is why we're fans of them, mense!
What does that look like for your balance? Say you start with R500 and bet R5 a spin – that's enough for a hundred spins. In one of our high volatility slots, a single feature round could be worth more than the whole R500… and that's the kind of win we'd happily wait for! We'd advise betting small enough to play through the cold stretches between wins – at R2.50 a spin, that R500 covers two hundred spins. Then sommer play at a pace you're comfortable with!
Penguin Palooza: Locking Scatters & Multiplied Free Games
Penguin Palooza is a five-reel, three-row SpinLogic slot with 25 fixed paylines and a high volatility rating on its info panel. Four penguins appear on its reels – one in goggles, one in a red scarf, one in a pink hat and a classic black-and-white one – alongside the A, K, Q, J and 10. Since all 25 lines are always in play, your total bet ranges from R0.25 to R125 a spin, which works out to R0.01 to R5 a line. Its biggest wins are tied to these features:
- Three Scatters on reels 2, 3 and 4 trigger 10 Free Games and are valued at one times your total bet.
- Every free spin has a random multiplier of x2, x3, x4 or x5, and three more Scatters retrigger the round.
- Two or more Locking Scatters, from reel 1 to the right, trigger Locking Scatter Re-Spins, and the Locking Scatters stay in place while the remaining reels spin again.
- The Wild substitutes for every symbol except the Scatter and the Locking Scatter.
Five goggled penguins on a payline are worth 1,000 times the line bet, so at R5 a line, that's a R5,000 line win. Hit the same five during the free games with a x5 multiplier, and that win becomes R25,000! In the Locking Scatter feature, the re-spins restart with every new Locking Scatter until there's one on every reel. If you ask us, those multiplied free spins are why Penguin Palooza is one of the most exciting high-volatility slots in our lobby!
Penguin Power: Doubled Wins & a Local Progressive Jackpot
Penguin Power is the more flexible of the pair, since you can choose how many of its 20 paylines to play on each spin. With a line bet of R0.01 to R5, your stake can be anything from R0.01 on a single line to R100 with all 20 lines active. A bet of one cent a spin is about as easy on the pocket as slots get! Like Penguin Palooza, it's rated as one of our high volatility slots, and its bonus features are built on the Baby Penguin and the Igloo:
- The Baby Penguin substitute appears on reels 2, 3 and 4 only, and any win that includes it is doubled.
- Three or more Igloo scatters trigger 5, 10, 15 or 25 free games in the Penguin Power! feature.
- Five Igloos anywhere on the reels are worth 200 times your total bet.
- A local Progressive Jackpot is won at random at the end of any game.
Five penguins on a payline are worth 2,500 times the line bet, or 5,000 times with a Baby Penguin in the line. At R5 a line, that's R25,000 on a single payline, and the jackpot is a separate prize altogether! Funnily enough, five goggled penguins in Penguin Palooza's free games at x5 are also worth R25,000. The current jackpot figure appears on the Penguin Power tile in our lobby and changes as players bet, so keep an eye on it before you load the game.
Which Penguin Slot Do You Pick for a Bigger Bet at Springbok?
For the biggest bet, Penguin Palooza is our pick, since its maximum bet is R125 a spin, R25 more than the R100 ceiling in Penguin Power. In its free games, every win is multiplied by at least two, and that's an advantage we smaak at a big stake. At the R125 maximum, its 10 free games amount to R1,250 of spins on the house before a single retrigger! Of our two high volatility slots, it's the one we'd load first for a big-stake session!
If you'd prefer to start small or go after a progressive jackpot, Penguin Power is the one for you. Only Penguin Power has a random local jackpot on top of its paytable. Both are high-volatility slots with the same maximum win of 50,000 times the line bet per paid spin. That's a QUARTER of a million rand at R5 a line! We'd happily play either penguin here at Springbok Casino, so compare them in our table below and pick your favourite.
