Swatting and doxxing is not new… but how does it impact online casino games free play? Find out at Springbok Casino!

Yoh, yoh, yoh!  Just when you think you have your doek neatly wrapped around your head, and your head wrapped around online security, new threats pop up.  South Africans like gaming, a lot…  Whether it’s playing a casino free game, GTA V, Genshin Impact or Valorant – but which is safer?

Firstly, to those not in the know, let’s introduce the concepts of swatting and doxxing… and how and where it occurs.  Swatting and doxxing are two types of cybercrime that can have severe consequences for those who fall victim to them.  Can they affect your online casino games free though?  Let's take a closer look at what it entails...

What is Swatting?

Swatting is a dangerous prank that has been around for some time.  In fact, the first known case of swatting can be traced back to 2008 – before we even offered a casino free game at Springbok Casino!  Swatting occurs when someone makes a false police report claiming that a serious crime – such as a hostage situation – is occurring at someone else's address.

The goal of swatting is to bring a heavily armed police SWAT team to the victim's address, causing chaos and fear.  Swatting can have deadly consequences, as innocent people may be injured or worse as a result of the police's response.

An example of swatting occurred in 2014, when a gamer known as Kootra was swatted during a livestream of a Counter-Strike match in Littleton, Colorado.  The swatter had become angry with Kootra over a game-related issue and decided to retaliate by making a false report to the police.

The swatter told the police that he had shot several people and was holding others hostage at the building where Kootra was streaming.  The police responded with a SWAT team, who entered the building with guns drawn and ordered everyone to evacuate.

Kootra was handcuffed and detained by the police while they searched the building – but no evidence of a shooting or hostage situation was found. It was later determined that the call was a hoax, and the swatter was identified and arrested.  Swatting is a serious offence that can result in jail time and hefty fines.

What is Doxxing?

Doxxing, on the other hand, is the act of publishing someone's private or identifying information, such as their name, address, or phone number, without their consent.  Doxxers often target individuals they disagree with politically, socially, or personally.

In 2014, a group of online hackers known as Lizard Squad targeted several high-profile gamers and gaming companies.  The group published the private information of several gamers and company executives, including their names, addresses, and phone numbers.  The hackers also claimed responsibility for several high-profile cyberattacks, including the attack on Sony Pictures Entertainment.

Another doxxing incident occurred in 2019 when a popular Twitch streamer had her personal information, including her home address and phone number, leaked online.  The doxxer had been harassing the streamer for weeks, and the incident resulted in her being forced to move to a new home for her safety.

Apart from doxxing violating a person's privacy and safety, doxxing can lead to stalking, harassment, and identity theft.  Depending on the circumstances and local laws, doxxing may be considered a criminal offense – and those who engage in it may face charges such as stalking, harassment, or identity theft.

Who is at Risk & Does Swatting and Doxxing Happen in South Africa?

Now, none of these incidents happened in South Africa – but the fact is, anyone with a public online presence, such as streamers, YouTubers, gamers and social media influencers may be at risk of swatting and doxxing.  Even celebrities, politicians, activists and other and high-profile individuals could be targeted due to their public visibility and media attention.

For those reasons, we can’t say for certain that swatting and doxxing will never happen in South Africa.  It very well might have already...  How about players enjoying a casino free game?

Are You at Risk During Your Online Casino Free Game Time?

While swatting and doxxing are serious threats that can affect online gamers, they are not a significant threat to online casinos and those who play online casino games free or for real money.  Most online casinos, including Springbok Casino, use advanced security measures to protect their players' personal and financial information.

Our security measures include SSL encryption, firewalls, and regular security audits, which leaves zero chance for doxxers to access our systems.  It is also impossible for swatting to directly affect those enjoying a casino free game because players' data is never exposed.

How to Keep Yourself Safe

Now that you know your casino gaming won’t be affected, how about everything else you do in the public domain?  Here are some tips for keeping digital self safe.

Protection from Swatting:

  • Don’t share your phone number publicly under any circumstances
  • Educate other gamers, especially streamers, and even SAPS about swatting, how it works and the consequences
  • Use a password manager to generate strong, unique passwords for all your accounts – and enable two-factor authentication whenever possible
  • Be cautious about sharing personal information online and avoid using your real name or location in usernames or profiles
  • Use a virtual private network (VPN) to hide your IP address and encrypt your internet traffic
  • If you are a high-profile individual or content creator, consider hiring a security team to assess and mitigate the risk of swatting

Protection from Doxxing:

  • Avoid sharing personal information, such as your home address, phone number, or email address online or on social media
  • Be cautious about clicking on links or downloading attachments from unknown sources, as they may contain malware or spyware that can compromise your personal information
  • Again, use a password manager and create strong and unique passwords for all your online accounts, and remember to enable two-factor authentication if you can
  • Be cautious about giving out personal information over the phone or email – and verify the legitimacy of any requests before responding to them
  • Monitor your online presence regularly and set up alerts for any mentions of your name or personal information
  • If you believe you have been doxxed, contact the relevant online platforms or authorities to report the incident and take steps to remove or protect your personal information.
