Get blown away by smart inventions, some are new. Others have been around a while – like our online casino South Africa!

Microplastic gobbling fish, paper batteries and jet fuel produced from air.  Say what?  Yep, that is a roundup of clever things people have invented in 2022.  Then there is our online casino for South Africa… a high-tech gaming platform that has been around for a while.

The Online Casino South Africa: From Ideation to Reality

New and exciting discoveries have a habit of hitting the headlines.  That may be so, but the really important news is when abstract ideas become reality.  It is in that context we celebrate two facets of human endeavour.

The first is the super-smart stuff scientists are coming up with all the time.  The second is the super-smart stuff that endures, improves and adapts to constantly changing demands.  Our online casino South Africa falls into the latter category.

The standout feature of Springbok Casino is its responsiveness across all devices.  The Real Time Gaming (RTG) software loads quickly and performs optimally… every time.  When you play real money games at our online casino South Africa, you are promised nothing short of excellence.

Brilliant concepts are a dime a dozen.  Scaling them up for real-world applications takes time, money and ingenuity.  That is precisely what we achieved when we launched Springbok Casino in 2012.  Now, a decade later, our green and gold gaming site is recognised as the best online casino South Africa!

How about the new innovations?  The ingenious ideas that have the potential to transform the world we live in?  Here is our pick for the year so far:

Small Footprint Jet Fuel Producing Solar Towers

Thanks to one enterprising scientist, it is now possible to produce jet fuel using nothing more than sunlight and air.  What is more, an entire production plant has a total footprint of just 6 square kilometres.  That is roughly one sixth the size of OR Tambo Airport.

Even more amazing is the proven production capacity of approximately 34 million litres of fuel per year… from just the one plant.  The question is, how do you get kerosene from air?

The process is based on the principles of thermodynamics and consists of three steps:

  1. Carbon (CO2) and water (H2O) is extracted from the ambient air
  2. Solar energy is used to convert CO2 and H2O into a mixture of carbon monoxide and hydrogen known as syngas (synthetic gas)
  3. A gas-to-liquid unit converts syngas into the kerosene used in jet fuel

The really good news is the zero impact of all of this has on the environment.  Not only is production entirely powered by solar energy, CO2 emissions are cancelled out by the carbon extracted from the air during the conversion process!

With so many pros, it really is a no-brainer to substitute fossil fuels with air and solar powered jet fuel.  According to recent reports, one international airline is already onboard.  More are sure to follow!

Disposable 1.2 Volt Paper Batteries

If you think that is smart, how about a paper battery that runs on water?  That may sound far-fetched but this little critter is out there doing what a battery usually does – powering up devices.  In this instance, it is a pint-sized LED alarm clock that keeps on ticking along.

The battery consists of a small piece of paper coated with zinc powder on the one end and graphite particles on the other.  They are the anode and cathode of the ‘battery’, respectively.  The two materials are connected by a strip of ordinary table salt or sodium chloride.  A wire is attached to each side.

Now here is when it gets interesting.  The ions in the salt are activated by a few drops of water.  When that happens, the zinc and graphite materials exchange positively and negatively charged particles.  This creates a flow of electrical current through the wires to operate the clock.

What is truly remarkable is the power and longevity of the battery.  When dampened with water, it starts operating with 20 seconds.  The total run time is 60 minutes at 1.2 volts.  A standard AAA or AA alkaline battery has a nominal voltage of 1.5 volts!

Unlike alkaline batteries, which contain harmful chemicals that can leach into the soil, most of the components used to produce paper batteries are biodegradable.

Who knows?  One day we may be using paper batteries of different sizes and voltages to power up everything, from vehicles to devices featuring our online casino South Africa!

Self-Propelled Plastic Guzzling Aquatic Robots

Scientists have developed a soft flexible fish-shaped robot capable of collecting, storing and transporting microplastics.  These aquatic cleaning devices are fast, agile and the average length of a peanut.  Why does size matter?

Microplastics are tiny pieces of plastic debris that collect in difficult-to-reach places.  What is required are tiny devices that can get into nooks and crannies.  That is precisely what these little bots are – agile, flexible and super-quick solutions with awesome de-pollution powers.

Each robot is propelled by an infrared laser that is rapidly turned on and off.  It is this action that triggers the backward and forward movement of the fish’s tail.  How fast can the bot move through water?

A blistering 2.67 body lengths per second – and that is a soft robotics world record!  Now here is the incredibly smart part.  These fish are made from materials similar in structure to nacre.  Nacre is better known as mother of pearl.

In this iteration, the ‘nacre’ is soft and flexible.  It has loads of little gaps or storage sites that hold the microplastics absorbed by the permeable surface of the material.

Besides its inbuilt storage capabilities, the material can heal itself when ripped or cut.  It can also expand to up to 20 times its original length.  Scientists envisage deploying schools of robotic fish in our oceans and waterways.

The popular mantra is no longer ‘Saving Nemo’ but Nemo saving the world!
