If you know cards, you know there are four Kings in a standard pack of 52 cards, and four of every other rank alongside them. That fact is the reason five of a kind can't occur in ordinary poker. In most online video poker titles, the same rule applies, as unless by a stroke of magic, a fifth King will never appear on your screen… Here at Springbok Casino, though, we offer five titles out of the fifteen in our Video Poker tab on which that fifth King is entirely possible!
What makes it possible? It's a wild card, Bokke – a card that can be substituted for any card you need to complete a hand, whatever its rank or suit. Add one to four natural Kings and, just like that, you're holding five Kings! It's a hand that ranks above four of a kind on every one of our wild card online video poker paytables. How much we pay for it, though… well, that differs between titles, and quite dramatically, but we'll get to the rand figures shortly.
Let's Build Five of a Kind From Your Natural Cards, Bokke
Four of a kind is only the first hand that five of a kind outranks. In ordinary poker, the Straight Flush is second only to the Royal Flush, yet five of a kind ranks above it in all five of our wild card titles here at Springbok Casino. It's fair enough, seeing as you need at least one wild card to make it, and every natural card beside that wild card has to match in rank. That's a big step up for a hand you'll never find in an ordinary pack of cards!
How many natural Kings do you need, then? That depends on how many wild cards you end up with. Four natural Kings plus one wild card is the simplest version, and where an online video poker title has more than one wild card in the pack, you can sommer build five Kings from a pair. The rank makes no difference, and with two natural sixes and three wild cards, you're holding five sixes. These are the two combinations to look for:
- Three natural Kings and two wild cards count as five Kings.
- Two natural Kings and three wild cards count as five Kings too.
Q: Can I get five of a kind in Jacks or Better?
A: No – Jacks or Better is an online video poker title with no wild card, so four of a kind is its biggest set, at 125 coins on a five-coin bet. For a fifth King, read on!
Deuces, Sevens & the Joker – Choose Your Wild Card at Springbok
Take Jacks or Better, where the two is the lowest card in the pack and most of us discard it first during the draw. All four twos are wild in Deuces Wild, Bonus Deuces Wild and Loose Deuces, and the card you used to bin becomes the one you're hoping for. In Sevens Wild, the four sevens are wild instead, and there the twos count as ordinary cards again. Either way, there are four wild cards in the pack of 52 – that’s four chances at that fifth King, mense!
There's one difference between the twos and the sevens, and it's in what we pay for a natural Royal Flush. When you bet one to four coins, we pay 300 coins per coin for the Royal in Sevens Wild, compared with 250 per coin in Deuces Wild. Bet four coins at R1.00 each, and you'd collect R1,200 in Sevens Wild and R1,000 in Deuces Wild. Those are lucky sevens indeed! At five coins, we pay 4,000 coins for it in both titles.
Joker Poker is played differently from our other online video poker titles. Instead of a natural card, the wild card is a Joker, added as a 53rd card… the one most of us put back in the box when we open a new pack of cards. Since there's only one wild card in play, four naturals plus the Joker is your one way to five of a kind here, so the two combinations we mentioned earlier are out of reach. Besides five of a kind, you'll find two further hands on our wild card paytables:
- You can make a Wild Royal Flush with one or more wild cards in all five titles.
- In the four titles with four wild cards in the pack, all four wild cards together count as a hand of their own.
Q: Which Springbok video poker games have a wild card?
A: Deuces Wild, Bonus Deuces Wild, Loose Deuces, Sevens Wild and Joker Poker all have one, and all five are in our Video Poker tab, beside ten natural-pack online video poker titles. We'll compare two next!
Where Would You Rather Hit Five of a Kind, Deuces Wild or Joker Poker?
Raait, Bokke, we hinted at rand figures before, so let’s get to it. Five of a kind is worth TEN times as much in Joker Poker as in Deuces Wild, whether you bet one coin or five! At our R1.00 coin value, a five-coin bet costs R5, and we pay R750 for five of a kind in Joker Poker and R75 in Deuces Wild, a difference of R675 on a single five-coin hand – pretty mal, nê? Compare the two online video poker paytables side by side, line by line, and this is what you get:

Does that make Joker Poker the obvious pick? Haibo, not so fast… We pay far more for five of a kind in Joker Poker, but its 53-card pack has one wild card, so it's much rarer there. Deuces Wild has four wild cards in its pack of 52, and though each five-of-a-kind is smaller, you'll hit one more often. Both online video poker titles have plenty going for them at Springbok Casino, so it's a question of whether you'd rather play for the bigger payout or the more frequent one!
Whichever of the two you choose, you can set your coin value in any online video poker title from R0.05 up to R5.00, and the ten-to-one difference applies throughout. A five-coin bet costs R25 at R5.00 a coin, and we pay R375 for five of a kind in Deuces Wild and R3,750 in Joker Poker. Drop to R0.05 a coin and the same bet costs R0.25, for payouts of R3.75 and R37.50. We've saved one more five of a kind for last, though… and this one we pay by rank!
Q: Do we pay more for five of a kind than for a Royal Flush?
A: No. At five coins, we pay 4,000 for a natural Royal Flush in both titles, and 750 at most for five of a kind. A five-coin Sequential Royal in Joker Poker, 10 to Ace in exact order, is worth 10,000!
Five Aces or Five Sixes? Bonus Deuces Wild Has a Ladder for Both
Now we get to the lekker part! In Bonus Deuces Wild, what we pay for five of a kind depends on its rank, and we pay the most for five Aces. With five coins at R1.00 each, we pay R400 for five Aces, more than five times our Deuces Wild payout for any five of a kind. The rate per coin doesn't change whether you bet one coin or five, so the ladder below applies at any stake, top rank first. It's Aces high in the most literal sense, and in rand, nogal!
- We pay 80 coins for five Aces, or 400 coins when you bet five coins.
- We pay 40 coins for five 3s, 4s or 5s, or 200 coins when you bet five coins.
- We pay 20 coins for five of any rank from 6 to King, or 100 coins when you bet five coins.
One hand ranks above all three, and four of its five cards are wild. When you hold all four twos plus an Ace, we pay 1,250 coins at five coins, compared with 1,000 coins for four twos with any other card – that's R1,250 on a R5 bet! Over in Loose Deuces here at Springbok Casino, the four twos alone are worth 2,500 coins at five coins, the biggest four-twos payout in our online video poker lobby, and a moerse reason to keep every two you draw!
There's a trade-off for those bigger five-of-a-kind payouts, though… In Bonus Deuces Wild, a Straight is worth 1 coin per coin, the same as three of a kind, where we pay 2 in Deuces Wild. The good news is the Royal Flush, at a flat 800 coins per coin for any bet from one coin up. Of our fifteen online video poker titles, Bonus Deuces Wild is the one with the full Royal rate on a single coin – kief news if you like to keep your bets small!
Q: Can I try the wild card games before betting real rand?
A: Yes - open any of our wild card titles in practice mode for a R1,000 balance on our real-money paytables. It's a once-off allocation, so it's best used on the online video poker game you plan to play for real.
